Fitness and Health: Vital for Your Body

Physical Fitness relates to the ability to perform “Physical activity”. Overall fitness is of five main components.

  • Cardio Respiratory Endurance
  • Muscular Strength
  • Muscular Endurance
  • Body Composition
  • Flexibility

  1. Cardio Respiratory Endurance:

It is the ability of the body to continuously provide energy to sustain physical activity

Exercise: Walking, Swimming, Bicycling

Helps improve fat metabolism, improved delivery of oxygen, faster removal of waste products and decreased level of stress.

  1. Muscular Strength:

It is the ability of the muscle to exert force during an activity

Exercise: Lifting weights, taking the stairs

Enables us to avoid injuries, provides posture maintenance, helps you to be independent in your old age too.

  1. Muscular Endurance:

This type of workout helps the muscle to make repeated contractions over a period of time

Exercise: Walking, Jogging, Bicycling, Dancing

  1. Body Composition:

Body composition is the amount of muscles, fat, bone and other vital parts that your body is composed of. It is important for you to maintain a healthy percentage of body fat because
a) Excess body fat leads to heart disease and diabetes
b) Increases the risk of injury

  1. Flexibility:

Depends on the ability to stretch your joints, usually controlled by muscles.

Exercise: Swimming, basic stretching programme

A regular practice of these exercises helps prevent injuries, improves posture, reduces lower back pain, maintains healthy joints and maintains body balance during movement.
